Cub Scout Roundup & Recycle Regatta

Welcome Back to Cub Scout Pack 184!

9/18 @ 6:00PM - St Thomas Episcopal Church - ALL NEW & RETURNING SCOUTS
Bring your scout and checkbook/cash/credit card for dues ($80), along with a small boat made by your scout with any recycled material (we will also have pool noodles and supplies to make a boat at the church as well).  This can be quite simple to as elaborate as they like.  See the following examples (Thanks to the new Bear den!!):

Be sure that the boat floats and has some sort of sail so that they can blow on it with a straw to race it down the Raingutter for our Recycle/Raingutter Regatta! It can be made out of anything you can find in your recycle bins!  (foam trays, juice pouches, egg cartons, chip bags, lids, cardboard, etc.)  Be creative!  Decorate if they wish - it is not necessary, but we may have small prizes for best-looking, most unusual, etc.

The boys will also be meeting briefly with their den leaders, where parents can determine the best meeting time for the coming year, so bring your calendars.

9/18 7:15 PM @ St Thomas:  NEW PARENTS:  We will also be holding a separate second  meeting for new scout families to go over how scouting works, how our pack runs, and answer any questions you may have.  Any questions prior to this please contact Mike Carney at 717-560-6363 or at carneym@gmail.com.

Popcorn & Nuts Fall Fundraiser / Show & Sell Sign-ups

Scouts may begin taking orders NOW for our fall fundraiser.  If you haven't received the packet either in the mail or at the pool party, please contact Jill Carr (carr427@comcast.net) or Susan Beck (shabeck8401@hotmail.com) to pick one up.  If you are interested in online or app sales, contact Mike Carney (carneym@gmail.com).
Orders are due at den meetings the week of Oct. 17.  Products will be available for pick up the weekend of 11/12-11/13.  Money does not need to be collected at the time of order taking.  It will be due at the 11/28 pack meeting.

The Virginia Nuts fundraiser is a new one for us, and is an exciting alternative to popcorn. There are nut products starting at $12, plus something for Penn State fans!  Remember, selling not only benefits our council and pack, it also directly benefits your scout - they receive 25% of all sales in their scout account to be used for any cub scout expense (camps, events, etc.).

Mrs. Beck has set up numerous Show & Sell locations.  This is a great way to sell.  Just meet at the public location with your scout and prepare to sell to customers as they walk by.  We do need parents to assist in the selling at these events.  Scouts will receive a percentage of total Show & Sell sales based on the number of hours that they participate. Go to  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090f44a8a62eabfa7-popcorn to sign up.
For lots of helpful information, including top seller incentives, go to http://padutchbsa.org/popcorn/

Important Dates:

  • October 17 – ORDERS ARE DUE
  • November 12-13 – PICK UP ORDERS
  • November 28 – PAYMENT IS DUE

At this point the pack meeting Monday (5/23) will still be held outside at Overlook.  We will be checking the weather radar and will post a message on the Pack 184 website by 4:00 PM Monday to confirm whether we will be meeting at Overlook or at St. Thomas.  Either way, please arrive by 6:45 PM (unless you're a Webelos - please arrive at 6:30PM).

IMPORTANT UPDATES FOR ALL!!!!

LAST PACK MEETING!  5/23 at 6:45 PM (Webelos arrive at 6:30 to begin building fire).  The boys will be performing skits and other activities, plus roasting marshmallows/s’mores.
Please bring chairs, water/beverage for your own family, roasting sticks, and a flashlight just in case.  ** Each den is providing an important ingredient:  Tigers – marshmallows, Wolves – water for the fire, Bears – chocoloate, Webelos – graham crackers.
Check the blog if there are any last minute weather concerns.  In the event of poor weather, we will hold the pack meeting at the church at the same time.

UNIFORMS:  Are your scouts outgrowing any of their gear?  Please bring extra Class A/Class B shirts along to the pack meeting.  We are compiling a uniform closet to share with anyone who can use them – both new scouts and returning scouts.  Let’s share what we have with others and recycle to put them to best use!  (Be sure to remove your scout’s rank badges, pins, etc. for his scrapbook J)
If you are attending summer camp, it is very helpful if the boys wear their Class B shirts especially on the first few days.  If you don’t have one, they are available for sale $12 – see Mike Carney.

PACK HIKE on Saturday May 21, 1:30-2:30PM at Landis Woods RAIN OR SHINE.  Please bring a water bottle for everyone, and a small snack to share (fruit, bag of pretzels, etc.).  Feel free to invite any non-scouting friends that may be interested.

GAMES NIGHT --  Just for fun, we are inviting all scouts and their families to come out Monday June 6 at 6:30 PM to play some sports.  It will be casual and we will probably have the boys rotate through different games, depending on how many attend.  All are welcome!  Sign up for pizza at the 5/23 pack meeting and bring your own beverage.  Bring your favorite sports equipment!

Pack Meeting Monday April 25 at 7:00PM:

Come out and enjoy some fun activities led by Mike Rimer and the Bear den.
REMEMBER CAMP FORMS AND PAYMENT ARE DUE AT THIS MEETING!  Please bring a check payable to Pack 184 and all money from the sale of camp cards (and unsold cards).   ALSO last call for coloring books if you forgot to bring yours to the last pack meeting.

Swim Test for Summer Camp Attendees:

Both scouts and parents can attend the Troop 99 BSA Swim Test at Manheim Township High School this Friday, 4/22 at 6:30PM.  This will save a lot of time at camp if you have this done ahead of time.  Please come in your swim suit (locker rooms are available to change, if needed) and be aware that the boy scouts are also planning to do swim tests and other aquatic activities for their rank, so we will have to wait our turn.  We really appreciate them opening up this opportunity to us!  See below for details on the swimmer’s tests:
SWIMMER’S TEST: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating. BEGINNER’S TEST: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.
NOTE:  If your scout does not pass either test, it doesn’t mean they won’t be allowed to participate in any water activities, but they will be required to wear life vests and/or may have restrictions on the area of the pool that they are allowed in, for their safety.

DON'T FORGET GOGGLES AND A TOWEL!

4/10/16
